Similar covers

For some reason, the more I look at this cover...

...the more it reminds me of THIS cover.

The similarity is so striking that I eventually decided that I had to blog about it. I'm not sure what to make of it. I'm wondering if they're both the work of the same artist, but I don't have either book on hand to check out that detail.

Any thoughts?

Yes, the upraised arms and all that drapery -- I see why they look similar. It could well be that the same artist did both.

My guess would be not the same artist. They are certainly the same type of pose, but the details are different. The first has much more detail and definition in the woman and the drapery, and a different feeling with the light, and no backround detail to speak of. The second is a little more soft in the detail of the woman and draping, but gives the backround as well. I wonder if these are some classical pieces that were borrowed for book covers. They're both beautiful, but I get much more emotion from the first. I definately prefer it.

Despite looking closely at them I hadn't taken note of the difference in the backgrounds. Thanks for pointing that out!

And I do continue to wonder if it's the same painter, but if it is s/he definitely changed style a bit between the two (which strikes me as unlikely). It's something I'll have to check out! And once I finally get "Seer of Sevenwaters" in my hands I don't think I'll rest until I've also gotten ahold of "Red Tent" so that I can check the illustrators.
